We spend so much time preparing for interviews—researching, perfecting our pitch, rehearsing answers. It feels like it’s all about us getting ready to shine. But here’s the truth: Once that interview starts, it’s not about you anymore—it’s about them.
Think about it—what does the company really want to know? They want to know how you can help them solve their problems, achieve their goals, and overcome their challenges. If you shift your focus from “I need to impress” to “How can I help?” you’ll find yourself on a completely different playing field.
By focusing on them and learning about their needs and how best you can help, it takes the pressure off of you. It changes your concern about trying to be perfect with all your answers and it shifts your focus to simply sharing how best you can help.
Here’s how to make that shift once the interview begins:
- Ask Great Questions: Get curious about their biggest challenges, goals, and current needs. This shows you’re thinking beyond the role and are ready to contribute to their success.
- Listen Carefully: Don’t just wait for your turn to speak. Really listen to what they’re saying. Look for clues on what they truly need and where you can add value.
- Stay Curious: Keep the conversation flowing by digging deeper into their responses. Show that you’re engaged and care about helping them succeed, not just landing the job.
- Align Your Skills: Once you’ve learned more about their needs, connect your experience and skills to how you can help them overcome challenges or reach their goals. Make it clear that you’re the solution they’ve been looking for.
So, what do you think? Do you shift your focus during interviews to make it about the company, or do you tend to focus more on showcasing your skills? Let’s chat—share your thoughts or experiences in the comments below!
